Moulika Varango

tell me what led you to do this job?
I grew up in Abidjan, in a very intellectual world which did not necessarily destin me for the world of fashion, while being cradled in the opium context of Saint-Laurent. this context has contributed and still contributes to my passion for detail, to my definition of the elegant woman. elegance is the essence of a silhouette, beyond a piece, it is the gestures which ultimately serve and transcend the garment. It took my parents a little time to understand this choice of sale, but I had a reputation as an enfant terrible to uphold! I saw it as an intellectual challenge which ultimately did them credit, I scoured the libraries and studied fashion like a top of the class, I had to learn the codes. believing in every opportunity and deciding to make it a chance did the rest.

what nourishes your style, what is the source of your inspiration?
these are undoubtedly my emotions. I am of the astrological sign of Leo, what I feel is a fire that nourishes me. the emotion of the moment is essential.
the psychological state in which I wake up sets the tone. this morning, I was in a good mood, this energy takes me somewhere, gives me a particular desire, the desire for a detail. some details are permanent signature elements like my waist chain.

Who are the people who constitute references for you in your profession?
I obviously think of Mélanie Huynh, beyond the fact that she has become a friend, I am stylistically in touch with her, we are emotionally aligned. I particularly like her persistence in never dressing to please people but to please herself. This is a rule that should never be deviated from. like her, I dress to please myself above all, outside of conventions. dressing is claiming an identity, so I cultivate my androgyny, it is one of my trademarks.

What compliment would you like to hear or hear again in your profession?
“thank you for passing on your passion”, words spoken by my team and my clients. I am lucky enough to do a job that I love immensely and I consider that passion is an essential condition. without passion there is no taking a position and therefore no laying bare. a style without passion is useless, I would even say that it does not exist. behind my style and behind each style, there must be messages. my femininity is outside of conventions, my style is the claim.

the city or destination that inspires you or resembles you?
there is obviously Paris, because it is the city that I chose and it remains the capital of fashion whatever anyone says, home to the greatest designers like Gaultier, Yamamoto, Saint-Laurent, Comme des Garcons, Balenciaga . Paris has a cultural wealth linked to crossbreeding, it is an unrivaled creative breeding ground. this city keeps my mind sharp on every level, from the architecture to a dish or a glass of good wine. and then there is Los Angeles… I dream of living there, it’s a little Paris in the interior of the United States. a sort of reconstitution of bets on an American scale. I see rodeo drive and pretty woman! I would like to be able to contribute to nurturing the French touch there, to reinventing French ceremonial and chic, this art that we have lost a little and which consists of being the host of the world.
“I am of the astrological sign of Leo, what I feel is a fire that nourishes me. the emotion of the moment is essential. the psychological state in which I wake up sets the tone. »
how would you define your way of being and living?
authentic ! it is not a question of diverting the codes in the spirit of contradiction, it is much more complex than that. at the beginning, there is anne-laure (my original first name), my attachment to religion, to family, to my values; and the visible expression of what I am is moulika. I will never fit the mold, nor should anyone. I am amused by codes which are constantly changing anyway.

your favorite themes in your approach to fashion?
I would say the accessories, black and denim but reworked. I can wear crazy jeans but with a satin jacket and game-changing details. never more than three colors is also one of my fundamentals. knowing not to take yourself too seriously is also a real asset.

the person you dream of being able to dress?
how to choose ? there is the perfect plasticity of grace jones, a true artist, a woman of color who is a perfect representation of the independence and empowerment of women, a muse even before that of alaïa. Charlize Theron also makes me dream, blonde and curvy, South African to boot. and Angelina Jolie, perfectly insane in Tomb Raider.

do you have any rituals in life?
I say a prayer when I wake up, I believe in the law of attraction, so I visualize my day. and then in a more pragmatic way: put on my rings and my bracelets before even getting dressed, just after my shower, before wearing anything, like others would put on their lingerie. my hardware follows me everywhere.
“I will never fit the mold, nor should anyone. I am amused by codes which are constantly changing anyway. »
the style that annoys you?
one that does not fit the person's image and ultimately becomes worse than a disguise to the point of ridicule. some see an outfit as a way to exist socially and ultimately achieve the opposite effect. they seek the “last piece” simply to possess it, dispassionately, opportunistically. there is then neither game nor truth.

a favorite place to usually find yourself?
If someone looks for me outside, they will find me on the terrace of the Westin drinking a mojito after work or some evenings at the Alcazar. However, I am most of the time at the office or at home, I admit I like being in my den, it's my oxygen bubble.

your favorite object? how much does he weigh ?
my fetishes are my tattoos. I have several, armor that goes from shoulder to wrist, Nefertiti, a lion, goddesses holding hands… and then my rings, removing them would be as difficult as removing one of my tattoos.

what has weight in your life?
god, family and my work.

your objects per gram, what are they?
a 33g in smooth polished silver, and the 9g cable also in smooth polished silver.

if le gramme was a piece of clothing?
a perfecto, an essential piece of the wardrobe that is both rock'n'roll and timeless.
“Some people see an outfit as a way to exist socially and ultimately get the opposite effect. they seek the “last piece” simply to possess it, dispassionately, opportunistically. »
